Jan O Jorgensen advances to the quarter-final of the Swiss Open GP Gold event– Badminton News
The top seed of the event, Jan O Jorgensen from Denmark, overcame Kazushi Yamada of Japan, in the Men’s Singles round-of-16 and qualified for the quarter-final of the Swiss Open GP Gold 2011, at Basel, on March 18.
The top seed had to work hard for 52 minutes to chuck out the tenth seed Japanese in a three-set match.
Jorgensen, the only Danish left in the Men’s Singles category, opened his campaign in the first set in a shaky way, as he threw away five points by missing some easy opportunities. Kazushi grabbed the chances spared by his opponent and built a slight lead
of 11-10 in the opening half of the set.
Both players progressed with the same pace in the second-half of the game and reached at the crucial stage of 20-20. Kazushi’s tactics worked well as he earned two consecutive points and grabbed the set by a 22-20 lead, in 21 minutes.
In the second game, the Danish played confidently and took a quick lead of 8-4. At the interval, he was ahead of his opponent by an 11-8 margin. Kazushi failed to break the defence of his rival and lost the set in 17 minutes with a 21-15 score on the board.
The crowd was delighted to see the scintillating battle between the two seeded players.
The third and final set was completely one-sided, as Jorgensen became very fast at the net and dominated the rallies throughout the game. He quickly established a comfortable lead of 11-5 in the opening part of the deciding set. Kazushi found only a few
smashes to execute, as his opponent was playing attacking badminton.
After getting back from the one-minute interval, the top seed continued his winning run and won the set with a striking difference of 21-9, in just 14 minutes. The ending score of this 42-minute thrilling contest was 20-22, 21-15 and 21-9.
In the quarter-final of the event, the Danish will take on Wong Choong Hann of Malaysia, who hammered the eighth seed Dicky Palyama of Netherlands, in the pre-quarterfinal match.
