Jan O Jorgensen destroys Lin Dan’s dream in Men’s Singles second round of Malaysia Open Super Series
Denmark’s young player, Jan O Jorgensen, delivered a phenomenal performance as he defeated the ruling World and Olympic Champion Lin Dan of China in the round-of-16 at the Malaysia Open Super Series, in Malaysia, on Thursday, January 12.
With this fabulous victory, Jorgensen has also destroyed Lin’s dream to win his first Malaysian Open title. The Danish has finally registered his first win over the mighty Chinese in their six head-to-head meetings.
It was the biggest upset of the day as Lin participated in this Super Series tournament in a bid to win his first title in Malaysia Open, where the local hero and World Number One, Lee Chong Wei, is unbeatable.
However, the World Number Two Lin suffered with a severe treatment from the hands of lower ranked and un-seeded Jorgensen, who has secured a quarter-final spot in the tournament.
In the opening game, the Danish played competitive badminton until the end of the first half when he was slightly behind at 10-11. However, after the break, he lost his control as his higher ranked challenger injected more power in the rallies.
Lin remained ahead throughout the second half of the opening game. Jorgensen played negative badminton at this stage and lost to the Chinese with a one-sided score of 14-21.
In the second game, Danish shuttler became aggressive this time as he executed jumping smashes and remained close to the second seed Lin until 13-13.
At this stage, Jorgensen played positive game and did not execute any risky shot. He remained successful in taking the second game from Lin by a margin of 21-15.
In the deciding game, Jorgensen surprised the crowd with his power play as he employed jumping smashes which helped him to take a wonderful lead. He did not let Lin to level the score even for a single time in the whole set.
Lin played well in the initial points but could not finish the rallies effectively. He also failed to maintain his control over the pace of game. On the other hand, Jorgensen did not miss even a single chance to earn points.
By playing the planned and aggressive badminton, Jorgensen won the deciding game with a remarkable score of 21-15. The overall score of this 58-minute rubber-set contest was 14-21, 21-15 and 21-15.
