Jan O Jorgensen overwhelms Sourabh Varma in first round of German Open Grand Prix Gold 2012
Denmark’s in-form shuttler Jan O Jorgensen struggled hard to overcome India’s spirited opponent Sourabh Varma in the Men’s Singles first round of German Open Grand Prix Gold 2012 on Tuesday, February 28, at Mulheim, Germany.
Jorgensen, who has been positioned at number 13 in the Men’s Singles world placements, worked really hard to get rid of Sourabh, who is World Number 44 at the moment.
The Danish lost the first set with a narrow margin but found his flow back at the right time and took the remaining two games to win the fight by taking 53 minutes in the court.
The higher ranked Jorgensen played good badminton in the first game but failed to set up a comfortable lead as his Indian challenger also played at the same level.
Sourabh showed his impressive skills by playing to his maximum potential and remained close to his Danish rival until the break.
After the 60-second break, Jorgensen tried his best to take lead but again failed to overpower his opponent. He executed a few negative strokes in the ending phase of first set and lost it with a tight score of 19-21.
In the second game, both shuttlers again kept the crowd engaged by playing fast and attacking game and progressed closely on the score board until the one-minute interval.
After the break, Jorgensen started to dominate the game by playing superb net shots. His tight and spinning net strokes created trouble for his opponent, who became a little slow in the concluding part of second set.
Jorgensen managed to play positive badminton throughout the second set and took it with a 21-17 score on the board.
In the deciding game, Jorgensen showed his craft from the opening points and was in complete control. However, Sourabh also remained slightly behind until the break.
After the interval, Jorgensen continued his positive play and did not let Sourabh to take control of rallies. The Danish remained on track and won the deciding game with a convincing margin 21-15.
This Men’s Singles contest finished in 53 minutes with a 19-21, 21-17 and 21-15 score on the board.
