The Amsterdammers financial director Jeroen Slop has confessed that the club hopes to reach an agreement with the English Premier League outfit over the transfer of the Belgian stopper.
Ajax Amsterdam have confirmed that the club is still holding talks with English Premier League outfit, Tottenham Hotspur, over the transfer of Jan Vertonghen.
The Belgian stopper has long been linked with a move away from Amsterdam Arena before the 2012/13 season kicks-off, with Spurs being tipped to be his most likely destination.
Despite both sides holding talks for over a month or so, they have thus far failed to reach an agreement. The Spurs, who started with a bid of eight million Euros, have shown reluctance to go beyond 10 million mark.
Whereas, the Amsterdammers management has made it clear that they will not let go of their prized asset for anything less than 15 million Euros.
The Belgian international, who started his professional career at Amsterdam Arena in the 2006/07 season, has thus far donned the jersey of Ajax in 155 Eredivisie games, and has added his name to the score-sheet on 23 occasions.
The 25-year-old has an ongoing contract at Amsterdam Arena that runs until the summer of 2013. His contract has a clause that states that the central defender will receive 15 percent of the transfer fee when he moves away from
the Amsterdam giants.
Reports in Dutch media indicate that the Ajax management are not willing to pay his cut. However, De Joden financial director, Jeroen Slop, has revealed that Vertonghen’s transfer to the Spurs is in the final stage.
“We all hoped for a rapid agreement between Tottenham Hotspur and Ajax and Spurs and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814. It's in its final stage, but in our opinion there is still no concrete news”, Slop was quoted as saying to De Telegraaf.
Mustapha Nakhli, the highly-rated defender’s agent, has insisted that the Amsterdammers should make the deal happen at the earliest, as his client has always remained loyal to the club.
“Jan Vertonghen has always stood by Ajax, and he expects that the club does the same”, Nakhli said while talking to journalists.
Reports suggest that the two clubs will reach an agreement over Vertonghen’s move to White Hart Lane in the coming days.
