Ajax Amsterdam’s Jan Vertonghen has revealed that he only wants to focus at Ajax Amsterdam this season. The highly-rated defender remained heavily linked with a move away from Amsterdam Arena in the summer transfer window, but the 24-year-old decided to
stay with the Amsterdammers.
The 24-year-old is a product of the Amsterdam giants’ renowned youth academy, Jong Ajax, and started his professional career with his parent club in a Champions League encounter against Copenhagen in August 2006.
Since then, the highly-rated centre-back has represented Ajax in well over 100 games, managing to add his name to the score-sheet on 18 occasions.
The Belgian stopper performed exceptionally in the 2010/11 season and his good performances earned him interest from a host of elite European clubs. signature, but the central defender decided to stay at Amsterdam Arena.
Vertonghen revealed that he was glad when the summer transfer market concluded.
“I was glad on August 31, because it was annoying. I focus myself fully at Ajax this season”, Vertonghen said while talking to journalists.
The Belgian International played a key role in De Joden’s Eredivisie triumph by providing rock solid defence at the back. However, the Belgian stopper has failed to reach the same heights this season, raising many eyebrows in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Netherlands-c753.
Vertonghen has defended his below par form by revealing that it’s impossible to perform well in each and every encounter.
“I think a lot is expected from me. When we emerged champions last term, I took a very high level. One thinks that I can perform like that every week. I want to perform, but it is not always the same. And then, criticism is automatically there”, the 24-year-old
concluded.
The central defender’s current contract with the Amsterdammers runs until the end of the 2012/13 season. However, reports suggest that the Amsterdam giants are looking to offer the Belgian stopper a new contract.
