The Belgian stopper has revealed that his preferred destination is a move to White Hart Lane, and has insisted that he is happy to join Lilywhites despite they will not play in UEFA Champions League next term.
Ajax Amsterdam centre-back, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814, has revealed that his preferred summer move will be joining Tottenham Hotspur, and has stressed that he never claimed about leaving the Eredivisie champions only for Lilywhites.
The Belgian stopper, who has been representing the Amsterdammers since making his debut in the 2006/07 season, has been heavily linked with a summer move to join one of the several top flight clubs including the likes of Manchester
United, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429, Manchester City, Spurs and AC Milan.
However, the 25-year-old’s most likely destination seems to be a switch to White Hart Lane before the start of the 2012/13 season.
Although, Chelsea’s win over Bayern Munich in the final cost Lilywhites their place in the Europe’s most prestigious competition, the highly-rated central defender has made it clear that a move to the North-London club remains
his preferred choice.
“I never said that I will only leave Ajax for Tottenham. I only said that they are my preferred option. I have a good feeling with the club and that matters to me. They have already invited me and want to wrap this up shortly.
Tottenham missing out on the Champions League doesn’t play a role in my decision, but it could have consequences for their transfer budget”, Vertonghen was quoted as saying to the Belgian media.
The versatile defender went on to insist that if his move away from Amsterdam Arena does not materialise this summer, he will stay with De Joden for another season.
“The transfer talk doesn’t really affect me. I didn’t expect that I’d feel hardly any stress. If the move doesn’t happen now, I’ll stay at Ajax for another season, and can then leave on a free transfer”, Vertonghen concluded.
The Belgian International, who has thus far donned the jersey of Ajax in well over 100 Eredivisie games, has a contract at Amsterdam Arena that runs until the summer of 2013.
