The Belgian stopper’s impending move to Tottenham Hotspur seems to be in hot water, and the central defender is of the view that staying at the Eredivisie champions would feel like a slap in the face.
Ajax Amsterdam centre-back, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814, has confessed that it would feel like a slap in the face if his impending move to Tottenham Hotspur failed to materialise this summer.
The highly-rated defender has long been linked with a move to the English Premier League outfit. However, the two clubs have thus far failed to reach an agreement over the 25-year-old’s transfer fee.
Vertonghen has now insisted that he never expected this kind of situation while confessing that the transfer talk has not dented his relationship with other team members.
“The situation is not as I expected. Of course I'm happy with the guys here and the feeling with Ajax is still good. But being here gives me double feelings. Staying at Ajax would feel as a slap in the face. Everybody said that
I'm ready for the next step. Right now it's a case between the clubs and agents”, the Belgian stopper was quoted as saying to the Dutch media.
The technically gifted stopper, who came through the ranks of Ajax’s youth academy, started his professional career at Amsterdam Arena in the 2006/07 season, and has thus far represented De Joden in 155 Eredivisie matches.
His impressive performances at the heart of the Ajax’s defence for the past couple of seasons have garnered him interest from several European clubs including the likes of AC Milan, Manchester United and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429.
However, Vertonghen has expressed his desire to join the Spurs before the 2012/13 campaign commences.
Although, his impending move to White Hart Lane has hit a snag, the central defender has expressed optimism that he can join the English Premier League outfit before their first training session if both clubs agree on transfer
fee.
“That's still possible. They [Tottenham] will have their first training session on Monday. I've had no contact yet with the new coach [Villas-Boas]. But with my head I'm still at Ajax. I'm the captain, I won't be a rebel”, Vertonghen
concluded.
The Belgian international has a contract with Ajax that runs until the summer of 2013.
