Reports reveal talks between Ajax and English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur are ongoing over defender Jan Vertonghen.
It was predicted that talks would hit the wall after Tottenham Hotspur sacked manager Harry Redknapp, but it seemed the player has retained his interest in the London side. The 25-year-old has just a year remaining on his current contract with Ajax and is looking for a move away.
The Ajax financial director Jeroen Slop confirmed that talks were in the advanced stages with the English Premier League side. He revealed he hoped the deal would be concluded in the near future, even though there was no confirmed news.
Slop said in an interview:
“We all hoped for a rapid agreement between Tottenham Hotspur and Ajax and Spurs and Jan Vertonghen.
It's in its final stage, but in our opinion there is still no concrete news.”
According to Vertonghen’s agent Mustapha Nakhli, Ajax were not doing everything in their power to ensure the deal went through. He urged the club to make sure his client secured his dream move to White Hart Lane in the current summer transfer window.
Nakhli said:
“http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814 has always stood by Ajax, and he expects that the club does than now.”
The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Belgium-c2850 international began his career with VK Tielrode in 1997, moving to Germinal Beerschot in 2000 and then leaving for Ajax in 2003. He was promoted to the senior Ajax side in 2006, but was loaned out to Waalwijk shortly after.
He made 12 appearances in the league and scored three goals, before returning to Ajax, where he was immediately thrown into first team action. His first full season with Ajax saw him make 37 appearances in all competitions, where he scored two goals.
In the upcoming seasons, he went on to make 35, 49, 51 and 42 appearances in each season. Ajax won the Eredivisie twice in two seasons, in both 2010-2011 and 2011-2012, along with the KNVB Cup in 2009-2012. His individual efforts were rewarded by the AFC Ajax Player of the Year 2011-2012 and the Dutch Footballer of the Year 2012.
