The Amsterdammers captain has asserted that his side will successfully defend their Eredivisie title and revealed that his players are confident.
Ajax Amsterdam central defender, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814, has asserted that his side will successfully defend their title, as his teammates are confident of achieving the feat.
The Belgian stopper is a product of the Amsterdammers’ fabled youth academy and started his professional career at Amsterdam Arena in the 2006/07 season. Since then, the 24-year-old has represented the Dutch giants in more than 100 matches and managed to
score 18 goals as well.
The Belgian stopper, who has an ongoing contract with the Amsterdammers that runs until the summer of 2013, has performed highly since his arrival at Amsterdam Arena.
His consistent performances at the back have garnered him interest from several top European clubs including http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429, Tottenham Hotspur, AC Milan and Newcastle United.
The highly-rated centre-back took over the captain's armband following the departure of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roma-c31603 in the summer transfer window.
Vertonghen has revealed that morale in the dressing room is sky-high and every player in the squad believes that they can successfully defend their title.
“We have a good week training in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Brazil-c2858. The conditions were good. There is no one in our squad now who thinks that we cannot lift the Eredivisie title at the end of the season. Although we have to trim down a lead of five points at the top of the table
with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/AZ-c38571 Alkmaar, we believe that we can do that in the second half of the season”, Vertonghen said while talking to the media.
The Amsterdam giants are currently sitting fourth in the league table, five points behind the league leaders, AZ Alkmaar. Although the Amsterdammers have performed erratically in the first-half of the campaign, history suggests that they would not be performing
in the same manner after winter break.
Ajax will resume the league action on January 22 when they lock horns against the Eredivisie table-toppers at AFAS Stadion.
