Jan Zaveck-Bethuel Uushona to brawl for vacant WBO Inter-Continental welterweight gold - Boxing news
Jan Zaveck, the former IBF welterweight champion, will take on Bethuel Uushona, the former WBO Africa welterweight champion, in a 12-round bout with the vacant WBO Inter-Continental welterweight gold up for the grabs on March 24, 2012.
The event is being organised and promoted by Sport Events Steinforth’s Ulf Steinforth and the ring for the extravaganza will be setup at Maribor, Slovenia. The Jan-Bethuel skirmish will headline the event whereas the clash between Denis Simcic and Adam Hubinger
for the vacant WBO European light heavyweight title will co-headline the pay-per-view.
Jan, 36, has been in a total 34 bouts and came out victorious in 31. He has nailed 18 of his opponents by brutally knocking them out. Also known as ‘Dejan Zavec’, the Slovenian number one recently collected his career’s second defeat while defending his
IBF welterweight gold against Andre Berto.
Zaveck was in his fourth title defence bout but was unable to handle the knockout specialist Berto and lost the bout and the title in just the fifth round. Jan’s Saturday night opponent Bethuel currently ranks at number fifth position in world rankings as
compared to Jan who resides at eleventh.
Bethuel, 30, has been in a total 27 bouts and came out victorious in 25. He has collected just eight of his wins by knockout. The number one Namibian welterweight, infamous as the ‘Unstoppable’, waits for his opponent and possesses high level resilience
which allows him to carry the bout to the end without getting fatigued and collect decision based wins.
The duo recently met in a pre-bout press conference and shared thoughts about each other. Jan, while commenting about his strengths said, “Ushona is a good fighter, of course, WBO African champions and now he’s the current WBO #5. He is also very awkward
to box, but I’ll deal with that with my strengths: better boxing technique, better stamina and, of course, my wonderful fans backing me. I will win!”
The Namibian Bethuel reiterated that he will obliterate anyone who comes in his way and said, “We have the same dreams. Jan Zaveck wants once again to be and I want to be world champion. But, I have boxed and defeated anyone who stood in the way for my dream.
It will be the same for Zaveck!”
Jan will try his level best to accommodate the home crowd advantage but one thing’s for sure the battle will be a toe-to-toe one since both men reside in the top welterweight rankings and are prolific pugilists and former title owners.
