Jana Cepelova outs Iveta Benesova to reach the main round – Rogers Cup 2012
World number 59, Iveta Benesova, fell victim to the final qualifier upset at the hands of the 19-year-old Slovak starlet, Jana Cepelova, who is ranked 117 in the world. She tried her best to hold on to her rival but two major errors
in the match cost her place in the main round of the Rogers Cup.
Cepelova commenced the match with as serve hold and so did her rival. Both players repeated the same phenomenon in the following two games to push the scores at 2-2. However, the following three games witnessed an interesting battle
and featured three breakpoints on the trot that were 2:1 in favour of the 29-year-old Czech.
Both players held their serves in the following two games but the 19-year-old made sure that she kept the set alive by breaking her opponent’s serve in a ‘do or die’ game. Moreover, she levelled the scores at 5-5 and brought the
set into balance. Cepelova kept her calm and held her serve in the following game to take a lead of 6-5.
Benesova faltered on her serve and gifted the set away from almost clinching it in the 10th game. It hurt her a lot as the disgusting looks on the face at the sidelines told the whole story. She was agonized to miss
out on the opportunities she had in the opening set and the effect of confidence breakdown tempered her game style in the second set as well.
Both players swapped breakpoints to commence the second set. However, they settled into the atmosphere and hung on to their serves that pushed the scores to 4-3 in favour of the teen. The most important breakthrough of the set
came in the eighth game when the 117th ranked Slovak smashed a classy winner to take a lead of 5-3.
Cepelova held her serve with ease; losing just two points and that proved to be the final action from the day and for the 59th ranked Czech starlet who was expected to bounce over the Slovak underdog and reach the main
round of the Rogers Cup. Let’s see who is up next for the Slovak qualifier.
