Janko Tipsarevic beats Victor Hanescu 7-5, 6-4
Fifth seed, Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia, survived an early threat to overpower world number 102, Victor Hanescu, in straight sets 7-5, 6-4 in the second round at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell in Spain on Wednesday. It took Tipsarevic
an hour and 42 minutes to beat the Romanian.
Tipsarevic and Hanescu broke each other twice in the first six games of the opening set, evening out the score at 3-3. They went neck to neck till 5-5 but then the Serbian snatched two games consecutively and won 7-5.
Ranked eighth in the world, Tipsarevic took an early lead in the second set, claiming a breakthrough in the very first game and consolidating on it to move ahead 2-0. The Serbian did not let away the advantage, capturing it 6-4.
Tipsarevic bombarded his opponent with six aces, bagging 28 of the 36 first and 16 of the 33 second serve points in the match. The 5ft 11in tall utilised four of the eight break opportunities he created.
The Serbian is slated to meet Portuguese, Frederico Gil, in the third round. Gil dumped compatriot, Joao Sousa, in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the previous match.
Feliciano Lopez defeats Flavio Cipolla 6-4, 6-3
Feliciano Lopez, seeded seventh in the draw, defeated Flavio Cipolla of Italy in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to move to the round of 16.
Lopez and Cipolla started the match in a steady manner, as they won their serve in the first nine games of the opener and took the score to 5-4 in the former’s favour. The Spaniard, Lopez, capitalised on the third break point in
the 10th game and sealed it 6-4.
The left-hander struck in the fourth game of the second set and held his following serve to attain a 3-1 lead. He did not allow Cipolla to stage a comeback, winning it 6-3.
Lopez banged in four aces but also committed three double faults. The Spaniard clinched 26 of the 34 first and 17 of the 22 second serve points. The 30-year-old saved both of the break points he faced and converted two of the four
he received in the match.
The Spaniard needed just an hour and 14 minutes to rout his opponent in a one sided match.
Lopez will take on world number 47, Jarkko Nieminen of Finland, in the round of 16. The Finn outplayed Argentinean, Eduardo Schwank, in a three set thriller 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-4 in the second round.
