Janko Tipsarevic, Michael Russell qualify for the second round – AEGON Championships 2011
Janko Tipsarevic defeats Blaz Kavcic 6-4, 6-4
World number 31 Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia downed world number 76 Blaz Kavcic of Slovakia in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round of AEGON Championships at the Queen’s Club in London on Tuesday. The Serbian took just an
hour and 25 minutes to oust his opponent.
Tipsarevic broke Kavcic in the third game of the first set and held his serve in the next game to take a 3-1 lead. The Slovakian broke back in the eighth game to level the score at 4-4. Tipsarevic broke again in the ninth game
and served out the set at 5-4. The Serbian hit one ace and 54 percent of the first serves, claiming 73 percent of the points on them. The 26-year-old converted two of the thirteen break points he received on Kavcic’s serve and failed to save the only break
point on his own serve in the opening set.
The Serbian needed a single break of serve in the second set to grab it 6-4. The fourteenth seed kept his first serve percentage at 54 percent and bagged 80 percent of the points on them in the second set. The Belgrade resident
converted 29 percent of the first returns into points in the second set. The five feet and eleven inches tall capitalised on the only break point opportunity he created in the second set.
Tipsarevic is slated to play American Michael Russell in the round of 32.
Michael Russell beats Denis Gremelmayr 6-3, 7-5
World number 91 Michael Russell of USA prevailed over world number 113 Denis Gremelmayr of Germany in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 to move to the second round.
Gremelmayr was the first to take lead as he broke Russell in the third game to go ahead 2-1. Russell responded quickly, breaking back immediately to level the score at 2-2. The American broke again in the eighth game and served
out the set in the next game, winning the set 6-3. The five feet and eight inches tall converted two of the five break points he received on Gremelmayr’s serve and failed to save the only break points he faced in the first set.
Russell and Gremelmayr exchanged a couple of breaks of serve in the first ten games of the second set, squaring off the score at 5-5. The American broke Gremelmayr in the eleventh game and held his next service game to win the
set 7-5. The 33-year-old converted three of the six break points he received on the left-hander’s serve and saved two of the four break points on his own serve in the second set. The match lasted for an hour and sixteen minutes.
This will be the second meeting between Tipsarevic and Russell. Tipsarevic leads Russell 1-0 in the FedEx ATP head to head record.
