Janko Tipsarevic and Juan Monaco in favour of ATP event in Singapore – Tennis News
World number nine, Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia, and the Argentinean number two, Juan Monaco, think that Singapore can host an ATP event in the best possible manner.
Tipsarevic and Monaco participated in an exhibition event, named Clash of Continents, in Singapore and liked the atmosphere. Both of them appreciated the understandability level of the spectators.
The Serbian number two shared that the players took time out of their holidays to take part in the event for the sake of the people of Singapore. The Belgrade, Serbia resident believes that the Asian country will soon have its
own ATP event.
Talking to the reporters at the end of the event, Tipsarevic said, "It was good and was entertaining for the crowd. I was positively surprised on how well this crowd is behaving, how well they understand this sport and we hope
that you guys will have an ATP here one day. We are here playing for ourselves obviously but mainly playing for the crowd. Most of us came directly from holiday, but nevertheless the level of tennis was high."
Monaco added, "The tournament has been well organized and as you can see there are many people who want to watch tennis here. So if an ATP event is held here even more people will turn up."
Tipsarevic won the inaugural edition of the Clash of Continents. The Serbian player, who was representing Europe at the event, got a walkover in his last match, as Asia’s Kei Nishikori withdrew due to wrist injury. The 28-year-old
thus remained unbeaten throughout the event, as he had already downed Monaco and North America’s Sam Querrey.
Playing for South America, Monaco finished with second position at the event. The Argentinean national came back in style after losing the first set and toppled Querrey 1-6, 6-1, 10-7 in his final match. Monaco had beaten Nishikori
earlier at the event, so he finished with a 2-1 win/loss record.
The sport of tennis is developing in the biggest continent of the world. Many Asian countries are hosting tour level events now including Thailand, China, Japan, Qatar, India, Malaysia and Dubai. Singapore can also get one if it
make a strong proposal and pushes for it.
