Janko Tipsarevic beats Blaz Kavcic and moves on to quarter-finals of Delray Beach Championships
Sixth seed, Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia, defeated the Slovak, Blaz Kavcic, in the second round of the Delray Beach International Championships on Thursday. Tipsarevic outplayed his opponent in a three-set contest by 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 in two hours and forty three
minutes to book a place in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
Kavcic was slower to start the contest but built up his pace later. Although his first serve percentage was better than his Serb opponents, his ace count was far too low. The Slovak hit merely four aces in the whole match whereas Tipsarevic clouted 15.
The differentiating factor between the contestants was their serve. Although both men delivered 60 per cent of their first serves, Tipsarevic made most of it by securing 80 percent of his first serve points. The sixth seed saved 13 break points in the match
while converted five out of 15 break points.
The opening set was a great show of tennis skills from Tipsarevic. The Slovak used his powerful serve very skillfully, belting four aces and winning 82 percent of his serve points. He converted three break chances to secure the first set at 6-2, leading
the match 1-0.
The following set was fairly evenly matched as both men fought hard to take the advantage. Kavcic uplifted his first serve percentage to 65 and won 29 out of 40 serve points. After an exchange of serve breaks from both sides, the second set went into a tie
breaker round. The Slovak coughed a crucial double-fault at the set point but Tipsarevic couldn’t convert the match point at 8-7. Kavcic used his second set point to stay in the match, winning the set by 7-6.
Kavcic kept missing his opportunities even in the decider as he frittered two break chances at 1-1. The Serb cracked a break point to get an assertive lead of 4-1 after his opponent squandered four more break opportunities in the fifth game of the set.
The Slovak got ten chances in total to break the opponent’s serve in the set but he couldn’t cash in even once. Tipsarevic eventually won his second match point to seal the decisive set at 6-3, making it to the quarter-finals.
Tipsarevic will face the winner of the match between Dudi Sela and Ivan Dodig this week.
