Janko Tipsarevic downs Albert Montanes to reach round three – Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters 2012
World number eight, Janko Tipsarevic, stomped over the Spanish veteran, Albert Montanes, in straight sets at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters 2012, an ATP (Association of World Tour Masters 1000 event held in Monaco. He joggled up a 6-2, 6-3 victory against
the world number 71 to secure a place into the round of 16 on Wednesday.
The Serbian number two took down the 31-year-old to advance into the third round at this clay court event. The players last met each other at the French Open three years ago and after pocketing this match, Tipsarevic extended his lead in the FedEx ATP head
2 Head series by 3-1 against the Spaniard.
Tipsarevic entered the Monte Carlo Country Club with conviction and held his serve to tie the scores at 1-1. After Montanes held his serve in the third game, the ecstatic Serb went into savage mode and wiped out the following five games in a row, ultimately
sealing the opener by winning six games to two.
The 27-year-old carried his rhythm in the second set and earned the coveted break in the opening game to take the initial lead. Despite losing his serve in the very next game, Tipsarevic broke his opponent’s serve twice and jumped to a 5-2 lead. He lost
his edge again in the eighth game but capitalised on another break chance in the last game, sealing the deal with a 6-3 win.
Overall, the Belgrade native sought 10 break opportunities and brushed off two out of four breakpoints he faced. He manipulated a lower first serve share of 42 per cent as compared to the Spaniard’s 63 per cent but impressively marked 16 out of 20 points
on it.
Next up for the seventh seed is the French star, Gilles Simon, who crushed Frederico Gil with a bagel to set-up this clash. The ninth seed got the better of the Portuguese qualifier in 63 minutes for the third straight time. He lost his serve once but capitalised
on five out of nine break opportunities to manipulate an exceptional 6-3, 6-0 score line. Simon also fired three massive aces and clinched the match with 60 points.
