Janko Tipsarevic downs Martin Fischer to reach the last eight - Agricole Suisse Open 2012
World number eight, Janko Tipsarevic, was tested by the 245th ranked Austrian qualifier, Martin Fischer, in the second round of the Credit Agricole Suisse Open, contested in Gstaad, Switzerland. The 28-year-old Serb
gobbled up the victory in two hours and 37 minutes with the final scores of 4-6, 7-6(1), 6-3.
The top seed Serb held the first serve to love and broke serve in the third game of the match to take a lead. However, his serve was broken back in the following game that kept the scores together at 2-2. No drama was witnessed
at the clay courts of Gstaad until the scores moved on to 5-4 in favour of the Austrian qualifier.
Tipsarevic, against the run of play, failed to hold serve in the 10th game of the match that gave a surprising first set triumph to his rival. It was a terrible ending to a very aggressive start from the Serb superstar
who was expected to win the match in straight sets.
The starting to the second set was miserable for the 28-year-old Serb. He failed to win a single game from the first three battles that included a successful breakthrough for the 26-year-old Austrian in the second game.
Tipsarevic bounced back in the nick of the time to win a breakthrough back and decrease the trail to 4-5. He grabbed a crucial serve hold to keep the match alive and tie the scores at 5-5. In the tie-breaker round, the Serb utilized
her experience and power down the qualifier to enforce the final set.
The momentum was with the eight ranked Serb but the scores were kept together in the first six games that featured a swap of breakpoints. However, Tipsarevic broke serve in the eighth game and held his own to win the match.
Tipsarevic has set his eyes on the upcoming Olympics tournament. He stated, “If I do win a medal, then it is going to be a very interesting time. The Serbian people really appreciate the success of sportsmen and sportswomen so
any time that any of the country’s teams, like handball, water-polo or volleyball, or when Novak wins a big event, there are a lot of people waiting in Belgrade to cheer them and celebrate their victories. Actually, it’s funny because we have Toronto the week
after the Olympics but we had to sign a contract that says, in case any of us wins a medal, we have to fly home to Serbia.”
Jan Hernych is the next opponent for the Serb.
