Janko Tipsarevic downs Yuki Bhambri to reach the final eight – Aircel Chennai Open 2012
World number nine, Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia, had an excellent start at the season-opening event, the Aircel Chennai Open, defeating the local wildcard entrant, Yuki Bhambri, in the second round clash on Thursday. The top seeded
Serb took merely 62 minutes to wrap up victory in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, to book a berth in the quarter-finals of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250-level tournament in style.
The one-sided affair was contest on the outdoor hard courts of the SDAT Tennis Stadium in Chennai, India. Tipsarevic received a bye to have a direct access to the second round of the tournament and eased past the home favourite,
Bhambri, to carry on the voyage for his third championship title. The top seed outplayed his opponent in every segment of the game, giving him absolutely no change to have any sort of impact over the competition.
The bleak Indian opponent appeared totally helpless against the pin-point power-hitting of the world number nine and failed to register even a single break point in the entire matchup to finish on the losing side in the end. Tipsarevic
blasted past the Indian in the opening set, nailing a five-game killing spree to earn a bread stick in less than half an hour’s time. He clinched all of his seven first serve points in the opening set and stung three serve breaks to gain control of the contest
early.
Just one break of serve in the fourth game of the second set proved sufficient for Tipsarevic to close out the contest at 6-3, marching into the final-eight of the tournament in a convincing fashion. The top seed will take on the
Belgian wildcard entrant, David Goffin, in the quarter-final round of the tournament.
Goffin was successful against the unseeded German, Andreas Beck, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, in the second round on Thursday. He faced some tough time at the hands of the superior-ranked German but held his composure in the matchup to recover
from a one-set deficit, eventually winning the contest in the end to reach the quarter-finals.
The third matchup of round two was contested between the Japanese, Yuichi Sugita, who stunned the 82nd ranked Yen-Hsun Lu from Chinese Taipei in a close straight setter. The battle continued for two hours and twenty
one minutes before Sugita finally wrapped up the proceedings at 7-6(5), 6-4, to have a spot in the quarter-final draw of the Aircel Chennai Open.
