Janko Tipsarevic finally broke into the Top-10 to finish the ATP season
Serbia’s number two, Janko Tipsarevic, achieved his goal of breaking into the Top-10 in the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Rankings by the end of 2011 season. The 27-year-old leapt four places to reach the world
number nine spot in the latest release of the ATP rankings this Monday.
Tipsarevic took off the current season as the world number 49 and was determined with his ambition to break into the Top-10 male tennis players by the end of the season. His trip to the number nine ranked player was a story of
continuous improvement and sheer brilliance. He registered emphatic victories over a number of top class players and bagged two ATP championship titles to finish off this season on a high note.
The aggressive right-hander won 53 of his 78 matches played this year, suffering defeats on 25 occurrences, to become the ninth most successful player of the season. Despite of his brilliant performances with the racquet throughout
the season, Tipsarevic narrowly failed to get a berth in the circuit grand finale, the ATP World Tour Finals, in London. He was bettered by the eighth ranked American, Mardy Fish, who clinched just 570 more ranking points this season to qualify for the Finals
this month.
Tipsarevic had a brilliant start to 2011 season by reaching the semi-finals in Chennai but lost to Xavier Malisse of Belgium. He lasted till the second round in the Australian Open, followed by early round exits in Johannesburg
and Memphis, before he earned his first title shot of the season at the Delray Beach final. He was blown away by the former US Open champion, Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina, in straight sets in the final.
The Serbian had a couple of ordinary runs in the following events but was the semi-finalist at Belgrade, losing to the then world number two, Novak Djokovic. He lasted till the third round at the Roland Garros and went on to have
another title opportunity in Eastbourne, losing again to Anderas Seppi of Italy in the big match.
Tipsarevic had brilliant runs at Washington, Montreal Masters and the US Open, reaching the quarter-finals and semi-finals but it was in Kuala Lumpur that he finally broke his title drought. He defeated Marcos Baghdatis to claim
his first ATP championship title. He carried on his wining impetus in the Kremlin Cup in Moscow, winning the title against Viktor Troicki to reach the number 13 spot in ATP rankings.
Tipsarevic’s most recent tournament was the Paris Masters, where he finished in the third round, getting 90 rankings points to reach the world number nine spot.
