Janko Tipsarevic hits back to trounce Sam Querrey in round one – French Open 2012
Serbian number two, Janko Tipsarevic, bounced back to outsmart the former top-20, Sam Querrey, in a four-set nail-biter at the Roland Garros 2012 on Tuesday. He juggled up a 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(3), 6-3 victory against the American rising
star to charge into the second round at this prestigious clay court tournament held in Paris, France.
The world number eight made a drastic start at the court number one and lost his opening serve. However, he found the winning path after that and got the better of the American in their fifth meeting. After earning this limelight,
Tipsarevic not only avenged his loss at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells last circuit but also took lead in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head series by 3-2 against the American but also booked a spot in the round of 64.
Currently ranked 71st in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Querrey made quick in-roads in the opening set. After Tipsarevic held his serve in the fourth game, the American stroke out the last four games
in a row and pocketed the opener with a 6-2 win.
The 27-year-old on the other side of net rebounded in the second set. He swiftly swiped in his entire serves after blocking the lone breakpoint he faced. Tipsarevic got the breakthrough in the fifth game and clicked the set by
winning six games to four.
Tipsarevic kept his winning momentum in the following set and earned the coveted break in the opening game to take the initial lead. He maintained his lead until he lost his edge in the 10th game, eventually enforcing
a tie-breaker. The Serb cruised to a 4-0 lead in it before pulling out the victory with a 7-6(3) score line.
The ultra-fit Serb played his best tennis in the fourth set and quickly winded out his entire serves without facing any breakpoint. He capitalised on one out of two break opportunities in the eighth game and then held his serve
to bag the set with a 6-3 win.
Next up for Tipsarevic is the French contestant, Jeremy Chardy, who battled past Taiwan’s Yen-Hsun Lu in a five-set thriller to set-up this meeting. He was broken four times but cashed in half of the 16 break chances to formulate
a 6-4, 6-1, 6-7(3), 3-6, 11-9 success.
The 29th seeded local star, Julien Benneteau, will join the Serb in the second round. He trashed the German qualifier, Mischa Zverev, in four sets to progress.
