Janko Tipsarevic ousts Marcel Granollers to reach semis – Rogers Cup 2012
Fifth seed Janko Tipsarevic outclassed the Spanish contestant, Marcel Granollers, in straight sets at the Rogers Cup 2012 on Friday. After performing double duty, the Serbian star cruised into the final four at this Masters 1000 series taking place in Rexall Centre in Toronto.
Tipsarevic, who dumped Marin Cilic in the morning session, kept momentum rolling for his quarter-final clash against the Spaniard. He required a single break of serve in each set to overpower the world number 27 in their second duel against each other. After recording this victory, the Serb took revenge for his loss in Queen’s Club two years ago and levelled the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head series by 1-1 against Granollers.
The world number nine entered this Emirates Airline US Open Series event with poise. He superbly warded off all three breakpoints he faced to keep his entire serves. Tipsarevic capitalised on one out of four break chances in the ninth game and consequently clinched the opener with a 6-4 score line.
Tipsarevic perfected his game in the follow-up set and quickly bagged his entire serves without encountering any breakpoint. He cashed in the lone break chance in the fifth game to get the breakthrough, eventually sealing the set by winning six games to four.
The Serbian number two dominated throughout this one hour and 37-minute battle. He struck five aces and manifested a better first serve share of 60 per cent in contrast with Granollers’ 50 per cent. Tipsarevic acceptably plucked 24 out of 32 points on it and earned the glory.
Next in queue for Tipsarevic is his top seeded compatriot, Novak Djokovic, who battled past Germany’s Tommy Haas in three sets to set up this battle.
On another court, home favourite Milos Raonic was edged out by the American number one, John Isner.
“It’s disappointing in a lot of ways,” the disappointed Raonic stated after losing his match. “But I don’t think it’s disappointing that I lost at him. I think it’s more so for me that I lost in general and sort of the way I was playing that I lost. Maybe it’s a factor, you want to play well at home and stuff.”
Isner on the other end set up a clash with the 14th seed, Richard Gasquet, who bounced back to stun America’s Mardy Fish in a three-set thriller. The French broke his opponent’s serve six times to seal the deal in two hours and seven minutes.
