Janko Tipsarevic ousts Mikhail Youzhny to reach pre-quarters – Rogers Cup 2012
Fifth seed, Janko Tipsarevic, got the better of the Russian contender, Mikhail Youzhny, in straight sets at the Rogers Cup 2012 on Wednesday. He nudged up a 7-6(2), 6-4 victory against the world number 30 to book a spot in the third round at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event taking place in Canada.
The Serbian number two withstood early resistance against the 30-year-old to progress into the round of 16 at this outdoor hard court tournament. After earning the fame in one hour and 43 minutes, Tipsarevic not only took revenge for his loss at the Wimbledon Championships last month but also levelled the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series by 3-3 against the Moscow native.
Tipsarevic enthusiastically entered this Emirates Airline US Open Series event held in Rexall Centre. He swiftly swiped his opening serve to level the scores at 1-1. The Serb continued hitting angled shots to keep his remaining serves until he cashed in his lone break chance in the 11th game and took a 6-5 lead. Despite squandering his chance of serving out the set, Tipsarevic dominated in the tie-breaker to click the set with a 7-6(2) win.
Ranked ninth in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Tipsarevic kept momentum sailing in the following set. He dominated on his serves until he got the desiderated break in the eighth game and took a 5-3 lead. Apart from failing to block the lone breakpoint he faced in the very next game, the Serb broke his opponent’s serve once more and clinched the set with a 6-4 score line.
Overall, the last year semi-finalist (lost to Mardy Fish) ruled throughout the match. He smacked five aces and impressively availed 29 out of 35 points on his first serve share of 56 per cent.
Next in queue for Tipsarevic is 10th seeded Marin Cilic who dumped the Cypriot number one, Marcos Baghdatis, in straight sets to set up this meeting. The Croat was broken twice but capitalised on four out of six break chances to register a 7-5, 6-3 score line against the world number 45.
