Janko Tipsarevic overcomes Alejandro Falla to clear opening round – Rogers Cup 2011
World number 24, Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia cleared the opening round of Rogers Cup by defeating the unseeded Colombian competitor, Alejandro Falla, on Tuesday afternoon.
The contest was staged on the hard courts of the Uniprix Stadium in Montreal, Canada, as a part of the Association of Tennis Professionals) Master Series event. Tipsarevic took down his opponent in straight sets 7-5, 6-1, taking
one hour and eighteen minutes of play to advance to the second round of the tournament with ease.
Unseeded in the tournament, Tipsarevic exhibited his magnificent tennis skills to outplay the Colombian qualifier in straight sets. Falla posed some resistance in the opening set but never gave a serious threat to the belligerent
Serbian opponent in the entire game. Tipsarevic to the opening set after a stiff contest but proved absolutely devastating in the following set, forcing his way to victory in style.
The unseeded Serb crafted a total 10 break opportunities in the entire matchup and converted just three of them to close out victory in a convincing fashion. His 50 per cent precise serve earned him 24 out of 29 first serve points
and remained unbroken in the whole contest, with Falla utterly failing to construct a break opportunity.
The opening set went on neck-to-neck, with both men failing to break the opponent’s serve and took the scores to 5-5. Tipsarevic squandered away three break points but converted the fourth opportunity on the most crucial time in
the opener to close out the set at 7-5, getting one up in the contest.
The following set was an all-Serb show, with Tipsarevic carrying on his demolition job with intensity. He barely lost a point on his serve and gave no chance to his opponent to recover in the game. Tipsarevic raced away to 4-1
lead and then nailed his third serve break of the day to close out the second set at 6-1, moving into the next round of Rogers Cup.
Up next for Tipsarevic in the second round of the tournament will be winner of the clash between the 15th seeded Spaniard, Fernando Verdasco and Tobias Kamke of Germany. The matchup between the two men was suspended
on Tuesday due to heavy rainfall and shall be completed on Wednesday to decide the winner.
Tipsarevic registered two assertive straight sets victories against the Colombian last year at Washington and Roland Garros. He now leads the head-to-head series against Falla by 3-0 and has not dropped a single set in all the
three encounters he had against him.
