Janko Tipsarevic slays Mischa Zverev in the second round of the Serbia Open
World number 36, Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia blew away his second round opponent, Mischa Zverev of Germany in front of his home crowd at Serbia Open at Belgrade, Serbia on Thursday afternoon. Tipsarevic wound up the one-sided affair
in just 53 minutes, settling the final score at 6-2, 6-0 to book a berth in the quarter-final draws of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 tournament.
The 99th ranked German appeared a total mismatch for the seventh seeded Serb and nabbed just two out of 14 games in the contest. Zverev’s errant stroke play was the only cause of his destruction in the competition, as
he sprayed balls all over the clay court, with most of them ending long and wide. The German didn’t make any break opportunity and dropped his serve five times, with three consecutive serve breaks in the second set. He won two games in the opener but proved
to be a wall of sand against the furry of the Serb in the second set.
The Serb had a tough time in the opening round match against Kei Nishikori of Japan, as he had to recover from being one set down to win the contest. The Serb faced no real challenge from his German opponent this time round and
cruised through the matchup with the utmost ease.
“I promised my audience they will see better play from me in the second round and I kept the promise,” said Tipsarevic after winning his match against Zverev.
It was the 15th victory for Tipsarevic in the running ATP season and one of the most assertive ones as well. He had nine opportunities to break the German serve and he converted five of those to reach victory. A total
of 77 points were played in the contest, with Tipsarevic amazingly securing 52 and Zverev taking the rest of 25.
The German held his serve twice in the opening set before Tipsarevic pushed him to face the set point at 5-2. Zverev submitted the first set to the Serb at 2-6, hoping to do better in the following set. The German slumped further
as the Serbian domination reached its peak in the second set. Tipsarevic won six straight games and rocketed away to victory at 6-0 in the most assertive manner.
Tipsarevic will take on the Indian sensation, Somdev Devvarman in the quarter-final matchup. The Indian won his three-set thriller against the third seed Spaniard, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the second round.
