Janko Tipsarevic topples Hiroki Moriya in the second round – Thailand Open 2012
Top seed, Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia, faced limited resistance in beating the qualifier from Japan, Hiroki Moriya, in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, in the second round of the Thailand Open in Bangkok.
The Serbian star needed one hour and 36 minutes to complete this win over his opponent.
Ranked ninth in the world, Tipsarevic likes to play in the Asian swing of the ATP World Tour, as he had performed quite well here. He captured Malaysian Open title in the same week last year and also fared strongly at the other
events.
Tipsarevic and Moriya made a steady start, as they won their serve in the first eight games to even out the score at 4-4. The Serbian number two claimed a breakthrough in the ninth and made the most of it to triumph 6-4.
The 28-year-old bombarded five aces on Moriya and did not commit any double fault. The 5ft 11in tall had a below average first serve percentage of 65 but did well to convert 15 of the 17 of them into points. The Serbian contender
did not provide even a single break opportunity to his Japanese rival and availed one of the six he created in the opener.
Carrying the winning momentum into second set, Tipsarevic hit a blow to Moriya in the opening game and held his next serve to attain a 2-0 lead. The Serbian player did not allow his lower ranked rival to comeback, capitalising
on the advantage to close it 6-4.
Tipsarevic was a bit erratic on the second deliveries this time, as he lost four of the 12 points on them including a couple of double faults.
The Serbian stated in the post match press conference, "I expected a tough battle. I saw him play in the US Open from the qualifying round. He also beat Robin Haase in the first round here, so I knew there would be no walk in the
park. I should have won easily as I had break points in both sets. But I'm happy to win in straight sets."
Tipsarevic will face the winner of Donald Young and Fernando Verdasco in the quarter-finals.
