Janko Tipsarevic wants to win Aircel Chennai Open – Tennis News
World number nine, Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic, has vowed that he will try to capture next season’s Aircel Chennai Open title.
The Serbian number two will be the top seed at India’s biggest tennis event. The ATP World Tour 250 tournament will be organised from January 2 to 7 on the outdoor hard courts of SDAT-Nungambakkam Tennis Stadium in Chennai.
Tipsarevic will be making his sixth appearance at the Aircel Chennai Open. Last year, he gave his best ever performance at this event, losing to Canada’s Milos Raonic in a three set thriller 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 6-7(4) in the final
round. Making his first appearance in Chennai, he had lost to the French player, Paul-Henri Mathieu, in the first round.
Talking to reporters in a recent interview, Tipsarevic said, “You have been seeing a lot of me in the last few years and I really want to win the whole thing this year. The Indian crowd is great and the atmosphere during the evening
matches is electric there.”
Last season was the best of Tipsarevic’s career so far, as he attained his highest ranking of number eight. The Serbian national defeated Argentina’s Juan Monaco to capture the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart, Germany. He was close to
winning his second tour level crown but ended as runners-up after getting stunned against Thomaz Bellucci in the final of the Crédit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad, Switzerland.
Among Tipsarevic’s other notable performances was his semi-final showing at the Mutua Madrid Open, where he upset the then world number one and his compatriot, Novak Djokovic, in the quarter-finals.
Commenting on his game, Tipsarevic added, “I have improved my game in all aspects but the biggest change came in my mindset and how I was able to keep up with the constant pressure. I feel it (is) mainly the attitude on court.”
Tipsarevic qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals due to Rafael Nadal’s withdrawal from the event but lost all three of his matches at London’s 02 Arena.
The Serbian was happy to know that former Indian number one, Somdev Devvarman, will make his comeback at the Aircel Chennai Open.
He said, “He has been unlucky with his injury lately, but I am sure he will be back. Chennai is a great place to start the comeback.”
Devvarman, who is a good friend of Tipsarevic, missed most of last season due to injuries and his ranking dropped even out of the top 500.
