Jankovic and Lisicki book a berth in the second round – Family Circle Cup 2013
Former world number one, Jelena Jankovic, was tested by the 86th ranked American, Melanie Oudin, who strived extremely hard to fight back from a set down to level the scores. She was almost an inch away from registering
an upset but the 18th ranked Serb ended the comeback in the final set with a scintillating winner down the line. The final scores were 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in favour of the 28-year-old Serb who reaches the second round of the Family Circle Cup, a tournament
hosted in Charleston.
Jankovic stated in a post-match interview at court, “She has this game I don't really like and doesn't really suit me - I always have trouble with her. But actually it was our first time playing on clay and the other two times
we played on grass, so it was a different surface this time. Overall I think I played a pretty good match today.”
Previously, the Serb had lost a couple of head-to-head matches against the 21-year-old American and was still waiting for her first victory. So, it was a critical contest between for her and she dug deep to keep the chances of
reaching the advanced stages of the tournament alive.
Jelena Jankovic faces Caroline Garcia of France in round two.
In the other contest, world number 41 Sabine Lisicki sidelined the 62nd ranked Georgian Anna Tatishvili, in the opening round at the Family Circle Cup on Tuesday. She registered an emphatic double bagel 6-0, 6-0 to win
the contest and register a resounding 2-0 head-to-head lead against the 23-year-old Georgian.
Lisicki told the reporters, “Especially since we don't have that much time switching from hard to clay, it's always great when you play so well in the first round. I've played well at this event before and I enjoy being here. I
always play better once I step on that centre court.”
Lisicki will lock horns with an American athlete Mallory Burdette in the second round.
Other winners from the first round contest were Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Jessica Pegula, Varvara Lepchenko, Serena Williams, Stefanie Voegele, Laura Robson, Madison Keys, Julia Goerges, Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, Vania King and Marina
Erakovic.
