Jankovic will become #1. Is womens tennis a joke?

Jelena Jankovic will become world #1 on August 11. She will have the dubious distinction of being the only tennis player to reach the #1 ranking without even reaching a grand slam final (forget winning one). Clijsters and Mauresmo atleast were Grand Slam finalists before becoming #1

I think womens tennis is fast becoming a joke. The US Open series which is dubbed as "The Greatest Road Trip in Sports" should be renamed to "The Greatest Train Wreck in Sports". No top player participated in Stanford and Los Angeles and everyone was injured in Montreal including Sharapova, Ivanovic and Jankovic. My interest in womens game is going away and its not even half as interesting as the mens game right now. I was a strong believer in equal prize money, but now I feel its a shame that women get equal prize money.

Its not a joke but I see where you are coming from. Its mediocre. Justine Henin was shoulders above the rest. We have seen brilliant players like Clijsters(retired young) Mauresmo(lost form) and the likes of Hingis, Davenport, Capriati, Myskina, Mary Pierce injured or banned(or pregnant) 0h and ofcourse Monica Seles

I keep saying this but back in 2004 The Williams sisters were deadly and commited for the full schedule, We had the Belgians, Davenport, Capriati aswell as the emergance of the Eastern Europeans and in particalar the Russians. Only 4 years ago Womens tennis looked so promising and some even went as far as to say it was better or more entertaining than mens tennis.

Now look at it. Jankovic is nothing special and is about to be world no.1 and hasn't won a Grand Slam! If consistancy by itself is good enough to be the best then God help us.

I think of the top players only Kuznetsova has the game to be at the top but what lets her down is between the ears.

What we need is a new star. Someone who is a tennis player and not a fashion designer and a celebrity.

Please Justine and Kim-Come back!!!! These two if commited once again would easily be one and two in the world again.

Hopefully its just a transition faze. There are lots of very young players like Vaidisova ,Szsay and Wosniaki just to name a few. But none of them really look 'Wow' like Jennifer Capriati, Kim Clijsters or Monica Seles did.

In a nutshell, Womens tennis is mediocre.

As for the equal prize money. That is a result of feminism going to far and forgetting its original causes. It is now turning greedy and now women are becoming socially and politically suprior. It is such a shame because what they stood for was justifiable equality. Now it has gone too far.

'Jankovic no.1 is a joke'? But is there anyone right now who would be number 1 and not be a joke? The Williams sisters don't play enough, Maria is totally one dimensional and nothing really special. Kuznetsova like I said has nothing between the ears when it matters.

Justine Henin was and remains the only worthy no.1. It is such a shame she retired. But she quit whilst she was ahead and was still motivated. I think it was the right decision for her and her fans, but for tennis? Well she has left it in a really bad way.

Well i dont think when the WILLIAMS SISTERS their,there is no qestion of Jankovic to be no. 1 & if she did by any chance because of the point system I dont think she will remain more than 2days.After WILLIAMS SISTERS(speically SERENA) potentially ANA IVANOVIC deserves the no.1spot. But still their is no comparison of SERENA & VENUS & i think they will be No.1(SERENA) & No.2(VENUS) very soon.

Yes, women's tennis is becoming more a joke than a game. Everybody is always injured, so there's no real consistancy. Since Justine Henin retired, the #1 player is the player that's less injured than other.

its not a joke ivanchich hasnt proven herself to be number 1 since the french open u didnt menchin that and i think if jankovich plays her tennis her style she could win the us open

Jelena has been very consistent for a very long time but she has disappointed me!  I dont think she deserves to be No 1 she seems to have hit a wall around the top 5 in terms of results.  Since Justine left no one in womens tennis stands out from the crowd - I mean it was an all Williams Wimbledon final for dear sake. At the moment women's tennis is not worth watching!  As for equal prize money - it should be for equal Sets!  The Girls are fit enough these days and would seperate the sheep from the goats.

Yes, it is a JOKE! Why? because all the capable and attractive 'stars' are heading towards 'spoilt beauty queens' and lose their concentration...they are more concerned with their tennis outfits and their looks + nightlife! So they become distracted easily and cannot sustain top rankings....Good opportunity for the William Sisters to take advantage of!

Jankovic had her chances but she hasn't gotten the #1 spot yet. And I've heard that one before..."The Greatest Train Wreck in Sports." It's true and pathetic how so many of the top players just pull out of tournaments. But if you've heard about the WTA's new plan, I think it will take care of this problem with mandatory events and hefty fines.

Woman tennis is undoubtedly getting uninteresting and unenterprising.

I mean none of the Serbians were ready to take the no 1 spot and here we have Ivanovic and the Jankovic who both get thrashed now and then and if you remember both of them got beaten by a 31 year old mommy last year and thats Davenport

Where is woman tennis heading towards. nobody knows but if Ivanovic and Jankovic are consistent in their games than we might as well see some good tennis

yea..she is gon be number one, and eventhough i love her, n im a big fan of hers, im not sure if she deserves it...There was a time, i wanted jankovic to be number one, it was a year ago or so...wen she was playin against henin, n she was always so close to beating her.. like in the semis in stuttgart 7-6, 7-5...or in toronto last year..again 7-6, 7-5. if she was playing like that this year, she wouldve deserved the number one spot..but right now...im not really sure what shes doing...

I mean since henin left, There are no naturally talented women on the tour just machine like hard grunting hard forehand, two handed inconsistent backhand chicks. The womens game is just poor. The only one who has talent is amelie mueresmo, if she was'nt so mentally weak and physically stronger she would dominate the womens game easily. It is boring i would only watch it if they started playing naked in sweltering heat. I mean Sharapova still does'nt know how to play a proper drop shot. I mean the quality is sooo poor. It would only take one female tennis player with natural abilty to dominate the game for a very long time. Coz all the other women that play are average/slighlty less tennis players. Just one naturally gifted player, thats all.

I understand where you are coming from, but dont think its a joke. Instead have to keep in mind that most of the top players are injured and not playing. Plus the fact Ivanovic cant handle, as yet, her French Open win and top ranking. This alows Jankovic who plays tons of tourneys each year to keep earning points despite not reaching a Slam Final. If not for all these points she earns, she would probably be ranked 6-7th at best. Also there are handfuls of rising stars coming up, playing steadily and making some noise. Such as Radwanska, Wozniacki, Cibulkova, Szvay, Azaraneka. With top players injured, the door opens for these young hard hitters. Safina at the moment is looking like a number one( future). However despite if and when Jankovic gets to number one, she will need to earn it by winning a "Big ONe", and not due to points from playing so many tournaments. She has game, just not enough of it to contend for such titles against the heavy hitters, and sadly she admits to it. With Williams Sisters injured, this was perhaps their best time to regain the top spot. As much as I like them, Serena more so, it wont ever happen again. Yet again, injuires for most part is plaguing the womens tour, and the top ranking at this point is just a semi achievement. Having earning to be number one is another.
