Jans-Ignacik/Gonzalez shock Vesnina/Paes for the final showdown – French Open 2012
Polish-Mexican tandem, Klaudia Jans-Ignacik and Santiago Gonzalez, stunned the fifth seeds, Russia’s Elena Vesnina and India’s Leander Paes, in straight sets at the Roland Garros 2012 on Wednesday. They manipulated a 7-6(2), 6-3 victory against their seeded
opponents to progress into the title-round at this prestigious clay court event held in Paris, France.
Jans-Ignacik and Gonzalez dominated throughout the match to upset the Russian-Indian collaboration after warding off early resistance. As a result, they comfortably booked a place in the final round at this second Grand Slam tournament of the circuit.
The ultra-fit junction assertively entered the court number one and ruled throughout the opening set. They clobbered a better first serve share of 74 per cent as compared to their rivals’ 67 per cent and cashed in both break chances to get the upper hand.
However, they failed to brush off both breakpoints they faced and took the set to the tie-breaker. Jans-Ignacik and Gonzalez cruised in it before pulling out the opener with a 7-6(2) score line.
The enthusiastic Polish-Mexican junction improved their collaboration in the follow-up set and smoothly bagged their entire serves after blocking both breakpoints they came across. They cashed in both break opportunities and clicked the set by winning six
games to three. Jans-Ignacik and Gonzalez clobbered a lower first serve share of 59 per cent as opposed to their opponents’ 79 per cent but magnificently availed 12 out of 13 points on it.
Overall, Jans-Ignacik and Gonzalez ruled throughout the one hour and 16-minute battle. They spilled more unforced errors but pocketed the deal with 70 points.
Next up for the winning combination of Jans-Ignacik and Gonzalez are the seventh seeded Indians, Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi. The seeds trashed the Kazakh-Italian tandem, Galina Voskoboeva and Daniele Bracciali, in straight sets to set up this meeting.
Mirza and Bhupathi displayed top class performance throughout the 70-minute epic. They fended off three out of five breakpoints they faced and capitalised on five out of 11 break chances to register a 6-4, 6-2 success. They also clobbered a better first
serve share and fascinatingly marked 29 out of 41 points on it.
