Jans-Ignacik/Mladenovic outlast Petrova/Srebotnik to lift the title – Rogers Cup 2012
Polish-French junction, Klaudia Jans-Ignacik and Kristina Mladenovic, stunned the third seeds, Russia’s Nadia Petrova and Slovenia’s Katarina Srebotnik, in a three-set thriller at the Rogers Cup 2012 on Sunday. They summed up a 7-5, 2-6, 10-7 victory against
their opponents to grab their first title together at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Five event held in Montreal, Canada.
The unseeded duo lost their path in the second set but re-structured in the match tie-breaker to steal the spotlight. After pulling out the victory in one hour and 35 minutes at the Stade Uniprix, Jans-Ignacik captured her third title while the French teenager
shelved her first WTA title of any kind.
"All week we believed in ourselves and went for every shot," Mladenovic stated after the match. "We felt we had the right tactics for the important moments, and that's what made the difference, because we played so many super tie-breaks this week."
Jans-Ignacik commented in a press conference after conquering the tournament where all the top teams participated:
"We had to play two matches in one day yesterday and there was so much stress but I'm glad we did it. Kristina and I did so many good things this week so I knew we could make it in the final. It's just an amazing feeling right now.”
Jans-Ignacik and Mladenovic enthusiastically entered this Emirates Airline US Open Series event. They exchanged a serve break early in the set and then held their remaining serves with poise. The Polish-French tandem got the breakthrough after capitalising
on another break chance in the end, eventually pulling out the equaliser with a 7-5 score line.
The higher ranked tandem lifted their game in the following set. They dusted away two out of three breakpoints they faced and capitalised on three out of eight break chances, consequently sealing the equaliser by winning six games to two.
The match was poised on a knife edge but the unseeded team re-gained their strength in the super tie-breaker. They outclassed Petrova and Srebotnik in it and subsequently clicked the decider with a 10-7 success.
All in all, the Polish-French team spilled more double faults but clobbered a better first serve share of 63 per cent as compared to their rivals’ 58 per cent. They brilliantly warded off eight out of 12 breakpoints they came across and converted three out
of eight break chances to their advantage.
Jans-Ignacik and Mladenovic upset fifth seeded Spaniards, Nuria Llagostera Vives and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in opening round. They then stomped over three unseeded teams en route to the final show down.
