  1. Tokyo has a lot of japanese, and occasionally there's some English. A relative went there recently, she said to bring a dictionary to translate, and that you should learn the following phrases:

    Thank You

    Please

    Yes

    No

    I would like ____________

  2. as far as i know kanji is primarily used but some signs will have english or romanji (romanised Japanese) on them. i would recommend you learn basic phrases and get a Japanese-English dictionary because if you dont know any Japanese you will struggle to understand a lot of things

  3. I first visited Tokyo in January, 2007 and have been back 8 times since.  Even on my first visit, I had no trouble finding my way around from the airport (Narita) to my hotel in Ginza using the limousine bus (by myself).  Informational signs are in Japanese and English, and in places such as airports, hotels, and high-end restaurants, people speak English although the accent can be heavy.  English will not be available at out-of-the-way, neighborhood restaurants, although many young people speak it.

There is lots of information available on the internet for getting around Tokyo, what to see, etc.  Check it out.

My Japanese business associates were surprised that I could get around without help (I don't speak Japanese), but it really isn't difficult at all.  Enjoy your trip!

  4. Japan has strictly follow their own culture. They haven't really mixed with the rest of the world. Most of the japanese there only speak japanese. Very few would speak english. If you really need to find someone to converse in english with you, best bet is to find a student, not a policeman. Some students are in international schools and know english. But anywyas, going back to the your question.. most of the stuff in japan is in total japanese unles you are at a touristy area.

  5. Yes, everything.

It is very easy only for sightseeing in Tokyo.

  6. There's mostly a lot of things in english like if it said noodle shop in japanese(ramen, udon, soba, etc ya) then on the side it would say noodle shop and on the menu's on the side there's the menu written in english

most people there can speak english
