Japan conquer New Zealand in water polo match: Day three – 2012 Men’s Pan Pacs, Melbourne
The Japanese squad finally gets a taste of first victory in the tournament as they overpowered New Zealand’s effort in their fourth water polo match on third day of the 2012 Men’s Pan Pacs at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, on Tuesday, January 10.
After being defeated in their first three matches, the Japanese have gained much confidence from their debut win of the tournament. They strangled all hopes of their opponents in the four-quarter match, enjoying a tremendous 10-7 victory over New Zealand.
The Japanese squad took hold of the game from the first quarter, where they accomplished two goals against New Zealand’s single goal effort. Nonetheless, the Kiwis fought back in the second quarter, where they took lead of one goal over Japan, striking three goals in the round. The Japanese team failed to sustain their stance in second round, as they scored only one goal. The second round concluded with a score of 4-3, New Zealand being in a lead.
In the third quarter, the Japanese showed no mercy to their opponents and demonstrated their extraordinary efforts, scoring four goals in a row. New Zealand failed to show any advancement on the scorecard and the round ended with a score of 7-4.
The final round of the game was very decisive and both teams geared up their struggles to claim victory in the match. New Zealand needed to score three extra goals than Japan to secure their win but they failed. They scored three goals in the final round, which were levelled out by Japan in the same round.
Despite of being the highest goal scorer of the tournament, New Zealand’s Mat Reid could not bring victory for his team.
The Japanese squad celebrated their foremost win of the tournament that has placed them on the fourth spot on the overall points table while New Zealand stands on seventh position, with no victories.
In addition, the session concluded after the completion of all scheduled matches while the spectators appreciated exhausting efforts of all participating teams that tried their best to claim victory in their exclusive matches.
