Japan dominates round of 16 in Austrian International Challenge 2012 – Badminton news
Japan’s male and female shuttlers dominated the second round and marched into the quarter-finals of most of the categories in the Austrian International Challenge 2012.
The Japanese put a great show in first half of the third day and secured their spots in top 8 of men’s singles, women’s singles and women’s doubles categories.
The foundation was set by the men’s singles player Sho Zeniya who overpowered his Dutch challenger Dicky Palyama. The match prolonged to one hour and after first set loss the Dutch brought life back into match with second set victory.
However, after nerve-racking tussle the Japanese shuttler finished with final score card of 21-18, 16-21 and 21-14. Sho Zeniya will now lock horns with Polish opponent Przemyslaw Wacha in the quarter-final of the men’s singles category.
In women’s singles category Japan’s singles player Sayaka Takahashi reserved her right to contest in the quarter-final by thrashing Kamila Augustyn of Poland in just 23 minutes with score sheets showing the final figures of 21-11 and 21-18.
She will now exhibit her skills against Iceland’s Ragna Ingolfsdottir in the first quarter-final of women’s singles category.
The second female singles shuttler Shizuka Uchida did not give a single chance to her opponent Anu Nieminen of Finland after a tight first set 27-25 win and seized the victory with the notable margin of 21-10 in the second set.
The Japanese girl dominated in all the departments of game in the 39 minutes fight. Shizuka Uchida is now scheduled to meet Singapore’s Aiying Xing in the second quarter-final.
The Japanese female duo Kugo Asumi-Megumi Yokoyama also successfully surged into the top eight. The Japanese ladies were treat to watch when they nailed Singapore’s couple Jiayuan Chen-Dellis Yuliana with a decisive score of 21-16 and 21-17.
However, the real challenge awaits them in the quarter-final when they are expected to face top seeded Dutch duo Lotte Jonathans-Paulien Van Dooremalen or Turkish pair Ozge Bayrak-Neslihan Yigit in quarter-final.
If Japan shines in the remaining men’s and women’s doubles pre quarter-finals it will be interesting to see the Japanese shuttlers fighting their country fellows to surge into the finals of the Austrian International Challenge 2012.
