I would pick Japan anyday. Think about it, more technologically advanced, great culture, so many places to visit and there are tons of great things to see and do. I would love to tour Tokyo.

To all those saying australia, i have australian friends who wouldn't even consider going back becuase they say it is boring... and i have many aussie penpals who can't wait to get out of australia.

Well if you speak english I'd imagine Australia but Japan looks more interesting

I myself am in love with Australia, my heritage is there, but besides that, it's amazing.  It's beautiful, so much to learn and the people there are wonderful.

Japan would have better education and more too see. Its a completely different culture if you're from America or Great Britain.

I've travelled in Japan and lived in Australia. They're so different so it depends on what you want to get out of your exchange program.

If you want to learn another language, be exposed to Eastern culture, see beautiful shrines, eat really healthily and be steeped in ancient history then go to Japan. You will be totally out of your comfort zone but in an adventurous, exciting way.

If you want to blend in more, be more sporty, see amazing natural landscapes and live in a more relaxed place, that is more multicultural and Western, then choose Australia.

I would be more concerned about whether I was living in the country or city. Tokyo might be a blast compared to a rural town in Australia with 200 people in the middle of nowhere. Rural Japan can be boring and isolated and an Australian city with heaps of cultural events might be more your speed.

Australia.  It's an amazing place, you'll never want to leave! I used to live there.  There's so much to do as well and so much to see.  It's the best place for students, its cheap etc and full of young people, and they speak english!

Japan would probably be more culturally educational and the right choice if you would like something much different.

Australia's just a really cool place, that actually does have a lot of culture if you look in the right places. It's not as much of an adventure as Japan though.

I, personally, would go with Australia because it's such a cool place.
