  1. Hi, if you mean the common tourist spots there, it will probably be

-Asakusa (find lots of souvenir shops, onsen, shrines)

-Shibuya (where a lot of young people hang out)

-Shinjuku (lots of people, shopping, area beautifully lights up at night)

-Harujuku (see interesting fashion, Meiji shrine)

-Odaiba (get to see Tokyo Bay)

-Tokyo Tower (get to see the city in bird's eye view perspective)

-Ueno (more shrines, also nice at night, zoo)

-Akihabara (can find lots of anime and people dressing up as anime characters, video games, electronics)

-Ginza (expensive, high class area of the city)

-Tsukiji fish market (well it's a fish market but interesting nonetheless)

There are a lot more different things to do and i guess it just depends on what you are particularly interested in about Tokyo whether its food, traditional culture, anime, music, cars, etc or just wanting to explore it in general.  I recommend going to at least one temple such as Meiji shrine in Harajuku, witnessing the nightlife in Shinjuku, checking out the Emperor's Palace (I think its in Chiyoda but you can't go inside but at least you can take pics outside).  But as far as little random things to do, of course you must try their sushi, noodles, sake (if you drink) and all sorts of wonderful sweets they have over there (this thing called mochi- a form of rice cake is my favorite and also they have some really funky flavors for ice cream).  I'm not sure if you'll be able to see cherry blossoms since you guys are heading in the summer but who knows. They do often have fireworks in the summer so check for any festivals that may be coming up when you guys go, there's usually posters on the subway walls.  Karaoke bars, arcades, museums, cafes, car showcases and even their foodshops are fascinating to see.  I think sometimes just riding subway and walking around among the natives is interesting enough.  Hope i helped give you some clue.

  2. I think the last person answered this fine to be honest.  I just wanted to add a couple places, that if willing to travel 2 hours from Tokyo by train, are much more intense experiences.  The first would be Nikko.  It's a small city approximately 1:45 minutes outside Tokyo.  You can take a train straight there from Kita-Senju station.  Anyway, it's set in the mountains and has massive temples, towers, and great access for tourists.  The second would be Kamakura which is about 30 minutes from Tokyo, set in the woods, not as mountainous as the previous suggestion, but an excellent place.  You can really feel the natural beauty of Japan there and you can see the Japanese Daibutsu (Huge praying Budda statue).

So I guess that's what I wanted to add.  Some will say never visit Japan without seeing Kyoto, and I would agree, but if you don't have much time maybe my second suggestion would be best.  Oh, and maybe the emperors palace.  Located in the center of the city.

Good luck and have a great time.  The people here are amazingly friendly and patient with foreigners.
