  1. For starters, you must memorize the Japanese alphabet. This page tells you how to pronounce them:

If you are willing to spend money, get a good tutor locally or enroll in a class.

There's a software called Rosetta Stone that will help with immersion.

Find Japanese people around you, befriend them and ask for help with your learning.

Expand your vocabulary by getting a English-to-Japanese dictionary and start translating everything you see into Japanese, or look it up online. Whenever you see it next time, think of it by the Japanese name not the English name.

Say you want to translate "pencil". An easy way I like is, use Google translate it into Japanese text, "鉛筆"

Then use wiktionary to get the kanji's pronunciation, "enpitsu":

Some people like to learn by watching TV shows, anime, movies, etc. Make sure you listen to and hear the original sentence not just the subtitle.

Give me a shout to get a study partner.
