Question:

Japanese Beetles killing my cherry trees...HELP?

I have 2 young cherry trees (10 ft. tall) and the bugs are defoliating them quickly. I'm not fond of poisons, but will use almost anything to get rid of these killers. The leaves are beginning to look like lace starting @ the top. I used Sevin dust last year, but it didn't work. I'm surprised the trees came back this year. Last year my neighbor put up Bug Bags and by summers end we had burned 10 or 12 bags of the filthy things. I have a four year old whose playset is 25-30 ft. from the trees, so nothing that would be really dangerous, please.

  1. Call your local agricultural agent and ask for advice.  There may be a bug you can purchase to destroy them.  Otherwise, I've had the most success with the bettle traps.  While you're speaking to the Ag Agent, ask about treating your lawn to prevent another swarm next year.  There are chemicals that will kill the beetle grubs that burrow into your yard.

  2. Do you have an Agway near you? A hose-sprayer will cover your trees with whatever you decide to use. Agway sold me a parrafin type treatment--suffocates the little creeps, washes off the fruit. Point out your concerns to a qualified sales person-- they will set you up quickly.  Good luck and hurry up.--------Steelang---I used mild, soapy water the same way, I turned the beetles into fertilizer. That's the price for eating at my garden.

  3. Allot of people are having this problem her is what I do.

Don’t use traps they just attract more beetles. If you decide to use them make sure you locate them away from any of your favorite trees or plants. The netting may work, but they are already on your trees.

I have found that you just tap the branch that they are on they just fall to the ground. Do this early in the morning they are more sluggish, less likely to fly. The ones that fall to the ground, make sure you collect them too.

I use hot soapy water in a bucket just knock them off. The problem is I had thousands of them on our property. I had to be selective, they do lots of damage but all my plants and trees are OK this year.

Here is more information; the more you know the better choices you can make.

    Good luck,
