Japanese Chess - can anyone tell me about this?

I've seen a Japanese game sometimes on some films that seems to be a little like chess, though the pieces are flat with characters on them. Can anyone tell me more about this game and where I can find rules/pieces?

    Some aspects of the game are similar to Western Chess but there are many many differences which make it more than just a Japanese version of Chess.
