Question:

Japanese Chin, Pug and Puggle question?

We used to have a pug ages ago and before summer, there'd be huge clumps of hair just falling from her hind legs. They'd grow back - it was shedding. But it was more than any other dog I've had. Now we're getting a new dog, and we really like the Japanese Chin. It's perfect for everything (exercise, temperament, friendly, everything) and same with a puggle.

Yet I have two questions: what's the shedding with both of them? Does a puggle or a Japanese Chin shed more than a pug? Like do huge clumps fall out when summer is arriving?

And: How is a puggle's exercise need? I know a Japanese Chin doesn't require much; does a puggle? We used to have a pug and a beagle at the same time, many years ago. It would seem right to get a puggle now.

  1. I can't speak for the Japanese Chin, as I've never known anyone who had one.

But the "puggle" will vary, as they're a mix.  Some will have more Beagle characteristics, some will have more Pug characteristics.

I know 3 people that have them.  My boss's brother's dog sheds buckets, as does one that belongs to a truck driver I know.  The 3rd one sheds less, but still sheds.

Shedding not only has to do with genetics, but can be cut back considerably with a good quality diet.  I had a Boxer who ate Purina for several years as she was young, then I learned about the importance of a high quality food.  For the last half of her life, she ate a premium dog food and hardly shed at all.

  2. First of all "puggle" is just a stupid name backyard breeders and puppy mills give mutts and they wanna charge $1000 for them when you can get one from a rescue or shelter for $50!

I have a Japanese Chin she sheds just as much as the pug my sis had. Her hair doesnt really fall out much cause i brush her everyday. Their is no way to know if a pug beagle mixes hair would be like cause their is no breed standard cause they are not  breed.

I advise you not to get a "puggle" un less you adopt beacasue you would be supporting this horrible breeding business http://prisonersofgreed.org/index.html .

  3. I like the personality of a japanese chin. They are so sweet.

  4. Anything with pug blood in it as a direct ancestor is going to run the potential for shedding like a pug. Beagles, which is what a pug is mixed with, shed a lot too.

The chins don't shed as badly and the hair is easier to clean up and take off of garments because it is longer and silky and doesn't stick to fabric as badly, however chins are more delicate than pugs and not nearly as active. They are playful at times and intellegent, but tend to be more lap dogs. They do not shed in huge clumps, although they do shed more in the spring. I'm told by owners they barely shed at all.

One other breed I suggest you research: Short coated brussels griffon, also called Petit Brabancon and Belgian Griffon, depending on the registry. They look like a thinner pug, are very playful and have a lot of pug personality without as much shedding. They are also harider than a chin.

Don't look at the long coated and rough coated now, it looks like a completely different dog. A short coated griffon does not get long hair, it will stay smooth like the pictures without any trimming. It's a short coated dog, just one that isn't seen very often.

  5. *please* don't buy a puggle.

They aren't anything like the beagle or the pug.

They are very unhealthy, miserable dogs. They can't run like beagles do because they breathe like a pug. They have the will and need to exercise, but they CAN'T because its impossible for them to breathe correctly.

I urge you to buy one or the other, don't buy the deliberate mix, PLEASE.

  6. My daughter-in-law who is a vet loves Japanese Chins. She told me they are pretty low maintenance and do not have many health problems. No dog should loose clumps of hair, so what ever kind of dog you get be sure to feed it a high quality food. Stay away from the puggle as you don't know what you are getting with one of these mix breed. My daughter-in-law really dislikes these designer dogs and sees a lot of health problems with them.

  7. A "puggle" is a mixed breed dog.. there's no guarantees on health, temperment, coat type.. etc.  It can end up  more like a pug, or more like a beagle.  If you like that mix, its fine.. but please look for one in a shelter or rescue, and do not buy a mix from a "breeder".  These dogs do often show up in shelters, because people buy them on impulse and then get rid of them when they are no longer a cute little puppy.

I have never met a Chin in person, but in general, breeds with long hair shed less than short-haired breeds.  The coat will require daily grooming tho to prevent matting.

  8. I have heard many positive things about the Japanese Chin. They have not been over-bred like some of the toy breed dogs. For more information, and to find a reputable breeder go to the national club site

    http://www.japanesechinonline.org/

Puggles are stubborn and extremely hard to train. Trainers I have talked to say they seem to get the worst of both breeds. Remember that no honest, reputable breeder will EVER breed two breeds together. That leaves sleazy, dishonest puppy mills and backyard breeders with their poorly bred, poorly cared for breeding stock. You are not only getting a bad mix in terms of temperament, you are almost guaranteed an unsocialized puppy with health issues.
