Japanese comfort finger food?

I'm trying to think of a Japanese dish that can be easily eaten with your hands. Preferably more of homemade/comfort food? Something that your mum would make you when you're feeling down. Ideas?

  1. The good Japanse food that you can eat with your hands is sushi, onigiri, nikuman, shumai, yakitori, and odango.

  2. Sushi, Seaweed Salad, Rice!

  3. Onigiri.  Take a look at this site.

  4. Sushi is not a comfort food.

That being said, I would think something like onigiri stuffed with an umeboshi for finger-food.  When I think of homemade or comfort food though, I think of oyako donburi or omuraisu.

Omuraisu is basically an omelet filled with fried rice (but fried with butter and ketchup) and topped with ketchup.

  5. in Osaka, Japan... a lot of kids eat Takoyaki, Okonosumiyaki,Fish Pan Cake, Anko, sometimes western breads and cake, omochi, Enmusubi and deep fried pork as snakes that you could walk and eat.  In the winter, they will buy some baking sweet potato as well...

  6. The comfort depends on the person though I think but to me Japanese comfort food is ramen. That's what always made me happy as a kid. I'd also get happy with omuraisu (omelette rice) as already mentioned but I don't get excited over the idea as an adult because I don't eat eggs now. Neither of those you eat with your hands though. For that, I'd say onigiri (rice balls).

  7. Mochi Ice Cream!!

incase your wondering mochi is pounded white rice to a paastry type thing...mochi ice cream has flavoring to it and is frozen it is delicious...if you live anywhere by a japansese market youll find it...maybe at a vons or something dont know for sure though... or just regular flavored mochi is great.
