  1. I don't know, but I'd stay away. She has children and that could be a financial burden.

  2. If she's been here since the late 80's, I really doubt if she has a need to set up anyone. And yes, you CAN work with a green card ! Why do people answer questions when they don't know the answer ? My wife was working two months after she got here.

Don't be so negative. Have dinner with the lady and see how she is in person. All it will cost you is a dinner.

BTW, VERY FEW Japanese women want to hook a American for a green card !

  3. There are so many Japanese people living in the US without getting a citizenship because once they become a US citizen, they will lose their citizenship in Japan. That's why so many Japanese people just have a green card and renew their green card every 10 years.

Well, I'm actually one of them. I came to the states as an exchange student by F-1 visa (student visa) 14 years ago, and after I finished the exchange program, I went back to Japan, graduated from a communicty college and then transfered to a four year college in the states. While I was studying in the college where I got my bachelor's and master's degrees, I met my husband. We went out for more than 9 years before we got married 4 years ago.

Well, I applied for my green card 4 years ago and I finally got my 10 year green card this year and I'm qualified to take the US citizenship test but I don't like the idea of losing my identity as a Japanese so I just have a green card and don't have a US citizenship.

Anyway, I don't know about the woman that you met online. She could be lying or she could be telling you the truth??? But what I don't understand is why she needs to renew her visa every two years....That part doesn't really make sense.

But anyway, since she has a son, she might have married to an American guy and probably applied for a green card. But they needed to divorce so her green card application might have been denied. But what I don't understand is how she could stay in the US legally after her application for getting a green card had been denied. Or after she graduated from a college, how could she stay here for that long without a green card. Usually foreigners who didn't marry a US citizen get a work permit. The permit allows them to work in the US for one year after they graduate from a four year college or a graduate school. After that, if their employer lets the foreigners work for their company, the company will apply for an H-1b visa for them. H-1b visa is valid usually for three years, not two years. And if I remeber correctly, if foreigners renew their H-1b visa once, they have to go back to their country. But if the company wants them to work for them for more than 6 years and want to be their sponsor for their green card, the company can apply for a green card for them. So the foreigners can work and live here legally.

Anyway, if she says that she's lived in the states since the late 80's, she must have a green card. Otherwise, she might be living in the states illegally.

In the states, typically Japanese people are considered as rich people. But most of us are not. We are just middle class people who don't have a lot of money. And some Japanese people/students do actually work in the states illegally and some of them live in the states illegally. I don't personally know the kind of people now but I've read that kind of stuff on Japanese websites all the time.

But even though she might be living here illegally, she is a 38 year old woman who is single...so she must feel so lonlely. I assume she might want to have a one night stand...have a fling...I mean she might not be serious but she just wants to meet a guy who wants to talk to her...Anyway, I don't know if you want to meet her or not but in my opinion, she doesn't sound like she is telling you the truth. But still you are the one that needs to make the decision whether you want to meet her or not.

  4. Go ahead and go out with her ! What do you have to lose ? Just the cost of a dinner !

And YES you can work with only a green card. Millions of people are doing just that.

  5. Lots of people prefer to live here on a Visa than applying for U.S. citizenship. She may not have had the time, money or will to apply for U.S. citizenship.

I am married to a Japanese woman and she is not a U.S. citizen. SHe has been here for 6 years. She has a greencard so she can work. The only thing she can't do is vote plus she does not have to go to Jury duty which I am a little jealous of. LOL

Of course she could have gone to college in Hawaii. They do have Educational visas. Also maybe she met her x at the school. Talk to her and I am sure she will explain.

If she was married to an American she is probably a permanent resident. She can renew her visa forever at this point.

I say meet her. The worst thing to happen is dinner will be boring and you will have wasted a couple hours of your life. I am sure you have wasted time watching t.v. so what's the difference other than having dinner with her you at least have upside the upside potential of meeting a great woman you can share many good times with in the future. It will be an interesting experience no matter what I think and it sounds like you have nothing to loose.

  6. To be safe, I wouldn't go out to dinner with her.

It could be possible that she has a green card, but then I'm not too sure about this stuff.  However, I do know that if she does happen to have a green card, she cannot have an occupation.  I don't know if this information is actually matching any of your descriptions very well.  Foreigners can graduate from an American college, if that's what your asking.

    Good luck!!

I hope this helped a bit.
