I saw in my Japanese book two sentences that said the word person in them.

Could I interchange the words hito and kata?

examples:

Ano hito wa dare desu ka?

Ano kata wa dare desu ka?

Who is that person?

Yamada-san wa dono kata desu ka?

Yamada-san wa dono hito desu ka?

Which person is Mr. Yamada?

or does it matter which 'person' is used in the sentence type?

  1. According to the Denshi Jisho, "kata" means "person in charge of" and "hito" means simply "person" or "man."

  2. Kata is more polite. Hito is a plain way of saying it.

So, it depends on who you are talking to and how respectful you feel.
