Japanese hornets: are there any of these in the U.S.?

I saw a National Geographic special a few months ago on Japanese hornets. MEAN little buggers, they are!

Last summer, I could have sworn that I saw one on our front porch. I live in the deep south. Is it possible that the hornets are now in the U.S.?

Vespa crabro is common to the USA and it probably this you saw. Japanese hornets are not in USA.
