Japanese man survives on mountain as soldiers die on mountain?

The only thing I can remember a story like this in Japan is during WWII the Japanese soldiers were cannibalized and ate their own people as they died in Battle because that was their only mean for food.  At the end of the war the Americans could not figure out why they could never find (count) their dead and how the remaining soldiers were healthy when the Americans were emaciated.
