Japanese or American Pokemon Cards?

Which kind of Pokemon cards are better to collect? American? Or Japanese? Obviously unless you can read Japanese, collecting is the only thing you can do with them. In that situation you could at least build decks and play if you get American Pokemon cards. But I am just looking to collect for nostalgia mostly.

But which kind is rarer? Or worth more? Which is the better investment? For instance, I can get a booster box of Japanese Neo Genesis unlimited for 160.00, or I can get a booster box of American Neo Genesis 1st edition for 120.00

So which is the better deal? Which is worth more, or rarer? Do Japanese booster boxes cost more just because of the importing costs? What do you recommend?

( I want to start buying booster boxes of Pokemon from Base set ---> Neo Destiny. So I want to know if I should invest in American or Japanese cards)

American. Buy nowadays old cards don't go for much either way. I got out of the cards then shorlty got back into it. I'm out again.
