Katakana is used to write words of foreign languages, right? So, How do you write words with "f" sound? For example, how would you write names like Fergie, Francis, etc. or words like pharmacy, physics.?

  1. You take a vowel and make it small, like you see with cha, chu, cho, sha, shu, sho, etc.

    Fergie= Faagii ファーギー

    Francis= furanshisu フランシス

    Pharmacy= Yakkyoku 薬局

    Physics= Butsurigaku 物理学

  3. You would use the "fu" character (フ) because the Japanese tend to skip over the "u" sound unless it's doubled (フウ).

    Fergie = フアルギイ (fuarugi)

    Francis = フランシス (furanshisu)

    pharmacy = フアルマシイ (fuarumashii)

    physics = フイシクス (fuishikusu)
