The sentence 私は食事をしてきました

Does this mean the speaker has already eaten and has returned

(as in a company worker coming back from a lunch break)

Or does this mean he/she has come for a meal

(as in a guest coming for dinner)

  1. He has eaten and returned. If they were coming for a meal they would say 私は食事をしにきました and replace the te with ni.

  2. This sentence means that the speaker has come after finishing his meal. If the sentence was "watashi ha(wa) shokujo wo shinikimashita" it would then mean that the speaker came for his/her meal.

    I hope this helped.

    good luck
