Japan make it through to the semi final of the FIH Champions Challenge Tournament
Japanese women hockey team qualified for the semi-final of the ESB Electric FIH Champions Challenge tournament which is being played at University College Dublin in Ireland. The Japanese defeated the Indian women hockey team by 1-0 in a
nail-biting thriller and confirmed their place in the semi-final of the event.
The quarter-final was the second upset of the day as earlier in the day the Investec South African women were defeated by the Spanish side. The result was expected to be in India’s favour, but the Japanese did it in the dying moments of the match and qualified
for the semi-final.
The Japanese started their campaign in the tournament as a favourite in group A, but could manage to finish only at the third place on points table after the group matches. Out of their three matches they only succeeded in winning one of those while one
of the remaining two matches was drawn and in the other they had to face a defeat. Japanese finished third in their group with four points.
On the other hand same is the story with the Indians, who also won one of their three matches, while one of the remaining two ended in a draw and they too had faced one defeat. However they finished at the second spot on points table although with four points.
The first half ended goal-less despite the fact that both the teams created some chances, but those remained mere chances and could not be converted into goals. Both of the teams played very defensive hockey in the first half and kept each other away from
their circle.
In the second half the teams took little bit pace and tried to change the tempo of the game, but it took too long until the last ten minutes reached. Japanese women created a perfect chance in the 65th minute in which Ai Murakami scored the decider
of the quarter-final with the help of a wonderful dive. Japan will face Spain in the semi-final.
