Japan’s Rei Eto-Yu Wakita defeat Kana Ito-Asumi Kugo to win the Polish Open International 2011
Japan’s Rei Eto – Yu Wakita won the women’s doubles title by beating their compatriots Kana Ito – Asumi Kugo in the final showdown of the Polish Open International 2011, at Bialystok, Poland today on 28 March. Rei – Wakita, the number one seed duo of the
event, took only 30 minutes to chuck out the team who crushed the third seed pair of Alex Bruce – Michelle Li from Canada in the semi-final match of the tournament.
The top seeds remained impressive throughout the previous rounds of the event, as they did not drop even a single set to any of their opponents. Rei – Wakita started the game quite aggressively and established a decent lead of 8-3 in a few minutes. Kana
– Asumi failed to match the speed of the opponents in the starting points, but gradually geared up their speed and narrowed the difference of score by reaching at 9-11.
After the one-minute interval, both pairs kept the speed of the game quite high and the score progressed very closely. The match became very interesting for the crowd when the score reached 14-14. Both sides were playing quality badminton by employing their
superb skills and expertise. The top seeds accelerated the pace of the game by playing more attacking strokes and finished the first set with a good margin of 21-16, by consuming 17 minutes on the court.
In the second set, Rei – Wakita played a much better game and took a wonderful lead of 11-4 in the opening half. Kana – Asumi tried to play an attacking game, but failed to do that as their opponents spared no chance for them to fight back in the game.
After the 60-second break, the top seeds maintained the difference by playing aggressive game. The duo kept the bird low from the net by playing strong pushes, powerful smashes and cross-net strokes. Their stroke selection and execution was perfect and spared
no opportunity for the opponents to dominate the game. Rei – Wakita grabbed the final set with a stunning margin of 21-9, in just 13 minutes. The concluding score of the 30-minute match was, 21-16 and 21-9.
