Jared Berggren career-high 21 propels Wisconsin Badgers to a 77-31 romp over UMKC Kangaroos: NCAA
Jared Berggren scored a career-high 21 points and blocked three shots as Wisconsin Badgers humiliated UMKC Kangaroos 77-31 on November 22, 2011 before 17,230 at the Kohl Center, Madison.
The 6 ft 10 in centre hit 4-of-4 three-pointers, 4-of-5 two-pointers, and made his only free throw of the night.
"My teammates were just finding me in open spaces, and I was finally able to knock them down today," said Berggren, who was a physical mismatch inside or outside for whoever guarded him.
Berggren was not the only bright spot for the winners as Ben Brust came off the bench with 12 points on five shots from the field and also grabbed six rebounds. Mike Bruesewitz recovered from his shooting nightmare against Wofford
and ended with 10 points and six rebounds.
It was 246th victory for Wisconsin’s guard forward Ryan Evans, tying him for second on the school's career list. The 6 ft 6 in is just 19 victories shy of tying Harold E. Foster record for the most wins.
Not even a single UMKC player reached double figures on the night. Reggie Chamberlain and Trinity Hall added seven points each while guards Nate Rogers and Michael Gholston Jr. ended with six points apiece.
Badgers shot 51.7 percent (30 for 58) from the field and limited the Kangaroos to 20.8 percent (11 for 53). In addition to that, Wisconsin outplayed UMKC 41-23 on the rebounds and 18-3 in assists.
UMKC continued to deal with a swath of injuries, including Bernard Kamw and the reserve forwards Fred Chatmon and Jordan Payton. However UMKC Coach Matt Brown refused to buy it as an excuse;
"It is not an excuse; we were kind of limited there. We did not have a match for them in the post."
The Badgers were off and running from the very first possession and held a 16-point lead, 26-10, with 07:25 remaining in the in the first half. The Kangaroos failed to counter the badgers at any stage in the frame and the first
20 minutes ended with Wisconsin leading by 41-18.
The Badgers widened their advantage past 40 points midway through the second half to seal the win.
